Speaking to PEOPLE after giving birth, Annicka reveals the advice her mom gave her as she went into childbirth
Annicka Perry Gustin is opening up about the advice her mom, who gave birth to her 11th child mere weeks before she welcomed her first, gave her during their overlapping pregnancies.
When Annicka shared the news that she was expecting her first child with her husband Sean many months ago, the moment had a special resonance: Annicka's mom Micka Wright Perry — sister to Ballerina Farm founder Hannah Neeleman — was already pregnant with her 11th baby, due just 10 weeks earlier.
The duo definitely made sure to relish in the fun of the unique experience, recreating the iconic scene from the 1995 sequel to Father of the Bride — where a mother-daughter pair played by Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Diane Keaton have concurrent pregnancies — by riffing on their synchronized dance workout, complete with deep breathing and squats.
But, more seriously, their overlapping pregnancies meant that Micka was able to support her daughter through the at-times scary experience of giving birth to her first child.
"My mom let me and my sister come to her birth, and I feel like it was just a very cool and educational experience," she tells PEOPLE in an interview after welcoming daughter Emily Grace on Sept. 28. "It just gave me a lot of peace to know this is the exact same hospital I'm going to be giving birth at and this is where we park our car when we come. That was comforting to just watch the whole experience to know what to expect."

Annicka also notes that, by her 11th pregnancy, her mother had a breadth of experience with childbirth and was able to help her work through her "little scares" that cropped up as she was getting closer to delivery.
But above everything, she continues, her mom was able to help her understand the sensations of labor.
"Even the day of the delivery, I'm like, 'Are these the contractions that people are talking about?' " she says, laughing. "Even having her there to say, 'Yep, you're in labor.' "
And just as Annicka was there to welcome Lottie during her mom's delivery, Micka and her new baby came to Annicka's birth as she brought Grace into the world.
But Micka's wisdom wasn't just appreciated by her daughter: even Sean thought her tips throughout the process were helpful, he tells PEOPLE.

"I'm like, 'I've never done this before! I need help!' " he says, remembering his interactions with his mother-in-law in the delivery room. And, Sean adds, it's been "comforting" to get a "preview" of what they can expect for their own baby now that he's become a dad.
"It's like, 'OK, this is how fast our little baby is going to grow in 10 weeks,' " he says. "And it just makes us excited."
In addition to welcoming a new child, Annicka and Sean are in the process of moving next door to Micka, which will allow their two babies to grow up as neighbors and for Grace to be surrounded by plenty of aunts and uncles.

"I grew up around a lot of cousins, and they were always my best friends and it was always so fun," Annicka tells PEOPLE. "It'll be fun for Grace to have a lot of close aunts and uncles her age."
And as new parents, Annicka and Sean are thrilled that this next chapter will allow them to highlight their love for big families on social media — especially as, Annicka acknowledges, larger family structures get "a good amount of hate" online over whether the children "are getting enough love."
"You can have a really happy, loving, successful, beautiful, big family," she tells PEOPLE, "which a lot of people may not know."
"We're going to be authentic to what we love," Sean adds of their social media presence. "It's definitely a fun opportunity to share insight into what we care about and what's important to us, and whether people love that or hate that, that's totally up to them."
