Is UCLA eyeing a move away from the Rose Bowl?
According to the Los Angeles Times, the City of Pasadena and the Rose Bowl Company have filed a suit against the school saying the football team has been threatening to leave the Rose Bowl and instead play its home games at SoFi Stadium.
From the Times:
The complaint, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court against UCLA and the University of California Regents, alleges that the university has been "unequivocally expressing its intent to abandon the Rose Bowl Stadium and relocate its home football games to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood," and calls that "a profound betrayal of trust."
UCLA's lease runs through June 30, 2044, and Pasadena officials say taxpayers have invested more than $150 million in stadium renovations, while recently refinancing another $130 million in bonds for additional capital improvements.
Included in the filing is a letter from UCLA's outside counsel that said the school had "preliminary discussions" about changing stadiums.
UCLA has played at the Rose Bowl since 1982 after sharing the Los Angeles Coliseum with USC. The stadium first opened in 1922 and annually hosts the Rose Bowl game every New Year's Day. SoFi Stadium is the home of the Rams and Chargers and also hosts the LA Bowl.
The Rose Bowl is a 26-mile drive from UCLA's campus in Westwood and the distance between campus and the stadium has been cited as a reason for poor student attendance. SoFi Stadium is closer, however it's still 13 miles away. It's not within walking distance by any means. And is trading one of the best venues in college football worth it for a much newer — and more neutral — NFL stadium? There are likely a lot of UCLA fans who would say no.
A move away from the Rose Bowl would also be another change for UCLA as the school acclimates to life in the Big Ten and its athletic department tries to navigate out of a years-long financial deficit. The Bruins are 3-5 this season after firing coach DeShaun Foster following an 0-3 start. The team won three straight games under interim coach Tim Skipper after dropping to 0-4, but lost 56-6 at Indiana in Week 9.
