Matthew Lillard said his three kids are "uninterested" in his job

The actor, 55, is dad to two daughters Addison, 23, and Macey ("Ace"), 21, as well as a son, Liam, 17

The Five Nights at Freddy's 2 actor caught up with PEOPLE exclusively to discuss his upcoming horror projects

Matthew Lillard may be a household name — but he's still just "Dad" when he's at home with his children.

The father of three recently caught up with PEOPLE ahead of the release of his new movie, Five Nights at Freddy's 2, to talk about his upcoming roles, the joys of haunted houses and parenting children while famous.

During the interview, Lillard, 55, revealed that his kids Addison, 23, Macey ("Ace"), 21, and Liam, 17, don't pay much attention to his acting career.

"They associate me with the person that makes them take the trash out, pays for their college [and] is there to sort of help guide their creative life. My kids are — and I would assume that this is the truth for most quote, unquote celebrities [...] — uninterested in that job," Matthew says.

He adds, "I mean, it's a great job, but at the end of the day, it's a job. And you'd have to ask them that question. But I would venture to say that they don't really consider me in any way, shape or form as an actor. They consider me as their father, and that's all you really would ever want."

The Life of Chuck actor previously shared that his youngest child, Liam, wants "nothing to do with" acting while speaking to E! News in 2024. Meanwhile, Addison graduated from the University of Southern California's Roski School of Art and Design in 2025, and Ace is a student studying acting at Carnegie Mellon University.

"The good thing for me is that my kids have seen ebbs and flows," Matthew said of his children potentially following in his footsteps while speaking to the outlet. "They know the reality of the business. I never pushed anyone into it, but I certainly wouldn't deny the passion of my kids who are both artists."

Matthew shares his three kids with wife, Heather Lillard, a realtor. The pair married in 2000, and the actor previously revealed that it was an instant kind of love.

"I will tell you how much I believe in love at first sight," Matthew said in an old interview, which Heather posted stills of on her Instagram on Valentine's Day 2023.

"I met my wife at a golf tournament. She said she was going to Italy for a wedding with a bunch of friends. And in 10 minutes, I saw her, and I decided to go to Italy with her. At the end of the trip, I thought, 'Oh my God. This is the woman I'm going to marry.' "

He also previously shared that he and Heather are a "good yin-yang."

"I've been married 24 years in a crazy business," Matthew said in the 2024 E! News interview, adding that he and Heather "never had a difficult time."

"I am very carefree, like, I will jump off a cliff a million times. And my wife has the ability to balance that with a sense of diligence, and she's very prudent," he explained.

In addition to roles in the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy's 2 and Scream 7, Matthew has also recently partnered with Exact Sciences to help spread awareness about Cologuard, a noninvasive at-home screening test for colon cancer.

"Colorectal cancer is the number two killer of people in the world. And so I just feel like [...] if I could do something, if I can lift the message and sort of change people's perception of being tested, then it's a win," he says of the partnership while speaking to PEOPLE.
