Brice Otto had just crossed the finish line at the Los Angeles Marathon in March when a friend sent him a link to the Taco Bell 50K website with one simple message: "You should do this."
That was all it took — he was in.
"The reactions ranged from pure confusion and disbelief to outright concern," he tells PEOPLE exclusively.
"Most people thought I was joking and responded with sarcasm or the occasional eye roll," he adds. "One person stared at me like I needed professional help. But once they realized I was serious, a lot of them were actually impressed… or at least entertained!"

The Taco Bell 50K, held every October in Denver to coincide with International Taco Day, is no ordinary race.
Participants must hit all 10 Taco Bell stops along the course — no cutting corners allowed — and eat a menu item from at least nine of them. By the fourth stop, runners must have consumed at least one Chalupa Supreme or Crunchwrap Supreme. By the eighth stop, one Burrito Supreme or Nachos Bell Grande is required. Dietary restrictions are allowed, but otherwise, there's zero wiggle room.
"Drinks don't count as food, and all receipts and wrappers must be saved for proof of 'stupidity,' " the official rules read. Runners also get one off-course bathroom break at Wash Park, but no antacids are permitted. Finishers under 11 hours receive a commemorative item… if they survive.

"To be honest, it was kind of a goofy idea between the time I applied and when I got the 'acceptance' email a month before the race," says the 34-year-old. "I'd been running all year, but I realized I needed to train like I was prepping for Nathan's Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest."
"This was completely new for me," Otto adds. "I've done marathons, half-marathons and other endurance competitions, but never anything like this. And who doesn't love a Cheesy Gordita Crunch, quesadilla, or Crunchwrap Supreme? Or all of the above while running at altitude for hours?"

Soon after signing up, he told his sister Bailey the rules. Her reaction: "I have to tell TikTok." And she did. Overnight, the video blew up, amassing over two million views.
With everyone shocked, curious and eager for more, Otto decided to vlog the experience for fans.
"Do it for the plot," he says. "Lean into the chaos. Life's too short to take yourself seriously all the time. Have fun with it and create a memory that'll make people say, 'Excuse me, you did what?' "

In the weeks leading up to race day, Otto meticulously mapped out his menu strategy. He needed to figure out what his body could handle. "That meant long weekend runs with pit stops at Taco Bell, ordering multiple items — breakfast and lunch — with Baja Blast and Diablo Sauce," he says.
On race day, he ran solo but wasn't alone in spirit. His mom and sister flew in from Atlanta, and his girlfriend and college friends came to cheer him on. One friend even brought a beer bong, which Otto used to crush a Baja Blast at Taco Bell number five.
He says his strategy was simple: Crunchwrap Supreme at the drive-thru starting line, three items at stops four and seven to avoid lines, then one item at each remaining stop.
"Taco Bell #8 at mile 23 was by far the roughest part," he says. "You had to eat either a Burrito Supreme or a Nachos Bell Grande, and I put it off until the very end. My family and girlfriend preordered for me, but the Burrito Supreme came with tomatoes… which almost did me in."

Although he slowed down toward the finish, Otto celebrated with a Miller High Life at the Taco Bell drive-thru. Later, after a shower, he and his friends hit a local food hall and then a drum 'n' bass concert underneath a bridge on Interstate 70 in north Denver.
"I danced like an idiot until midnight," he says, "because I was worried that if I laid down, I wouldn't be able to get back up for days."

Looking ahead, Otto says he's already thinking about his next challenge. But, he knows the Taco Bell 50K will be hard to top.
"I have an impeccable ability to make questionable life decisions, and then fully commit to them," he says. "Between the altitude, the distance and my overly optimistic appetite, there were multiple moments when I thought, 'This is it, this is how it ends. All guts and no glory.' "

"But my medal — a Diablo Sauce packet taped to a ribbon — reminds me that with a little humor and a dash of crazy, you can go pretty far in life just by putting one foot in front of the other," he adds.
"In the wise words of the Taco Bell 50K motto 'I'm hungrier than I think I am and I can eat more than I think I can,' " he continues.
