A 9-year-old girl and her 12-year-old brother died after a car veered off the road into onlookers during a race
The accident occurred on the French tropical island La Réunion in the commune Saint Joseph on the island's southern tip. The island is located in the Indian Ocean, roughly 450 miles off Madagascar.
More were injured, including another child left in critical condition, following the incident, which took place on Sunday, Oct. 26 during the Rallye de Saint-Joseph, Le Monde and Nice-Matin reported, citing Agence France-Presse (AFP).
Public prosecutor of Saint-Pierre, Olivier Clémençon first told the press that the young girl had died. At the time, her brother was seemingly in critical condition.
"Unfortunately, the second child, aged 12, whose sister died, also succumbed to his injuries," he later said, per the outlets.

Spectators were standing beside the road to watch the race when the incident occurred.
According to the outlets, authorities in Réunion reported that four children between the ages of 6 and 12 had been injured, as well as a 35-year-old man.
"A car left the road and hit the group on the hard shoulder," a father, who wished to remain anonymous, told AFP, per Le Monde. "Everyone panicked, people were screaming, children were injured. It was horrible."
The prosecutor also told the media that a manslaughter investigation had been opened.
The pilot and co-pilot of the vehicle were questioned and underwent blood alcohol and drug tests. The tests came back negative.
Racing team l'effet Meddy paid tribute on Facebook following the incident.
"Today our passion has been turned over by drama. During the rally race, a terrible accident occurred, leaving a deep sadness in our hearts," they wrote, according to a translation. "Our thoughts are first and foremost with the bereaved family, their loved ones and we send them all our support, compassion and affection at this difficult ordeal."
They added, "We also have a sincere thought for the pilot and co-pilot, who are also experiencing a very trying time. Let everyone show indulgence, kindness and understanding: no one would want such a drama to happen."
