Audio controls expert SoundHound AI (NASDAQ: SOUN) is preparing its next earnings report for the evening of Thursday, Nov. 6. The company knocked the previous report out of the park, crushing analyst expectations across the board. The stock rose 26% the next day and 54% over the following week. SoundHound AI's Q2 report was a big win. Case closed!

Call me a nitpicker, but I'm not so sure that SoundHound AI deserved a 54% price jump after that report.

SoundHound AI's explosive growth turned heads on Wall Street

At first glance, everything looked perfect. SoundHound AI's revenues more than tripled year over year to $42.7 million. Adjusted net losses shrank from $0.04 to $0.03 per share. Those are the headline numbers, and SoundHound AI aced both of them. The average Wall Street analyst would have settled for a deeper net loss of $0.09 per share on lower revenues in the neighborhood of $32.9 million.

SoundHound's Q2 was a "show me" quarter, and the company delivered where most people were looking. Top-line growth surged to unexpected heights and the artificial intelligence (AI) developer signed a raft of impressive new deals. Together with milder adjusted losses, these upsides helped justify the market's excitement and the stock's big move. Management's raised outlook and cash cushion are real strengths.

SoundHound AI's fundamentals still raise an eyebrow

But the underlying fundamentals show a company still early in its transition toward sustainable, profitable growth. Cash burn, dilution, narrowing margins, a heavy dose of stock-based compensation, and the reliance on lumpy, sometimes low-margin deals are all realities that a level-headed investor shouldn't ignore.

All of these issues showed up in the widely celebrated Q2 report. Execution risk remains, particularly if SoundHound AI's revenue momentum stalls or costs aren't reined in.

What's not to love? Let's start with these three things.

Let's take a quick look at some of the concerns I listed above.

Cash burn

SoundHound AI burned $24.7 million of cash in the second quarter, based on $24.5 million in negative operating cash flows and $0.2 million of capital expenses.

And the cash burn is growing larger. Free cash flows were a negative $18.7 million in the year-ago quarter.

Stock dilution

The company keeps its lights on by selling new shares on the open market. SoundHound AI pocketed $260.8 million of extra cash from stock sales over the last four quarters, for example. The number of shares has more than doubled in three years:

Sure, it makes sense to take advantage of unreasonably high share prices by issuing more stock to hungry buyers. But this strategy undermines the value of long-term stock holdings, essentially halving each share's participation in future profits in this three-year period. Maybe it's time to start looking at fresh debt as an incoming cash source instead -- or positive cash flows, even.

Stock-based compensation

This problem is kind of complicated. SoundHound AI is glossing over its deeply unprofitable operations by issuing stock instead of cash-based paychecks. Twenty-three percent of last quarter's operating expenses consisted of stock awards.

This approach makes the company's financial statements less transparent while adding fuel to the dilution fires mentioned earlier. The non-cash stock awards also result in stronger adjusted bottom-line results, helping people forget about the painfully negative GAAP earnings and cash flows.

It's true that many companies rely on stock-based compensation, especially in the tech sector and during the early high-growth phase of a long-term business plan. That doesn't mean I have to like it -- so I don't. GAAP earnings and free cash flows are better than adjusted earnings, any day of the week.

The best way to think about SoundHound AI's next move

The best long-term investments marry explosive growth with a credible path to profitability and strong unit economics. SoundHound's Q2 showed the former in spades, but investors should keep a close eye on the latter to make sure the business can ultimately live up to the hype.

I say this as a SoundHound AI shareholder with lofty expectations for the company's long-term growth story. I just think people are too quick to brush off the risks and challenges this company faces on the road to potential greatness.

Unless next week's Q3 report is truly game-changing, I wouldn't mind a calmer market response or even a price cut. Meanwhile, SoundHound AI is more of a hold than an active buy idea in my book.

Early retirement success depends on a combination of strategic planning, realistic budgeting and smart investing. Here, financial experts offer some tips on how to achieve the goal of early retirement.

1. Start Planning Now (If You Haven't Already)

Nobody can truly predict the future. While you can't know your exact circumstances at retirement, particularly if you have a long way yet to go, you can spend as much time as possible planning for it, according to Gina Stoddard, chief of staff at Broad Financial.

"Preparing for retirement involves a lot of forethought and considering a myriad of factors. If you have the goal to retire early, you'll need to plan for your savings to last for likely a few decades," she advised.

You also need to evaluate the ideal lifestyle you wish to lead, any remaining debt, taxes due and if you'll receive any other sources of income, Stoddard said. Here are some key early retirement planning tips:

Start saving aggressively in your 20s or 30s.

Max out retirement accounts like Roth IRAs and 401(k)s.

Consider alternative investments for diversification.

2. Don't Rely on Average Retirement Numbers

The first thing Melissa Fox, CFP and owner of Future-Focused Wealth, tells people who ask about early retirement is this: "There's no such thing as average anymore. Especially not when it comes to savings, not when it comes to lifestyle, and definitely not when it comes to retirement."

Since every single person takes a different path and has a different pace to retirement, no single retirement calculator formula will work to find the specific amount you need. Better to work with a financial planner to look at your specific goals.

3. Use the 4% Rule as a Benchmark

One of the most popular strategies for estimating how much you need to retire early is the 4% rule. This rule suggests you can safely withdraw 4% of your retirement portfolio annually without running out of money over 30 years.

According to Michael Rodriguez, CFP and owner of Equanimity Wealth, if you have a $1 million portfolio, for example, you should be able to withdraw $40,000 annually and have your money last 30 years. Rodriguez also advised aiming for a slightly smaller withdrawal rate, around 3% to 3.5%, to allow for a bigger cushion.

4. Track Your Expenses

One of the biggest early retirement mistakes is underestimating your expenses. Rodriguez advises tracking your spending for six months to a year and adding a 20% to 30% buffer to account for unexpected costs.

"If you are unaware of what you are spending on a monthly basis, begin tracking your current expenses for six to 12 months and add a 20% to 30% buffer on top of your expenses to create a cushion."

For example, if you are spending $40,000 annually, it would be a good idea to plan for expenses in retirement to be around $50,000 to $60,000 annually. If you plan on retiring before you are eligible for Medicare (age 65), it is important to factor in healthcare costs as well, he said.

5. Maximize Social Security Benefits

If you are, or will be eligible for Social Security, make sure you are maximizing the amount you receive, which usually involves waiting until age 70, Rodriguez urged. Waiting until age 70 allows you to receive 124% of your full retirement benefit, which can be significant over the course of your retirement.

6. Consider Partial Retirement or Side Hustles

If your savings fall short, partial retirement can help bridge the gap. Working part-time or starting a side hustle can reduce the strain on your portfolio and extend your financial runway.

"If you are able to find work that you find fulfilling that also allows you to work at a level that is comfortable to you in retirement, this can help you significantly extend your portfolio in retirement," said Rodriguez.

7. Account for Inflation

You also need to account for inflation in your planning, Stoddard said. Inflation generally affects expenses that retirees still pay, such as housing and insurance, which, she explained, "statistically ascend in alignment with the inflation rate. Sometimes, even at a faster pace."

While inflation tends to have a relatively stable rate of increase, unexpected changes can cause unusually high rates of inflation.

8. Diversify Beyond the Stock Market

Stunning dips in the stock market this month reveal that it's important to have assets that are not invested in the stock market. Stoddard suggested alternative investments "like precious metals," which tend to hold some sort of value as they're a tangible asset, and their value tends to work inversely to the stock market.

Likewise, owning real estate is typically viewed as owning an inflation-protected asset.

Some retirement accounts that allow for alternative investments include self-directed Roth IRAs, self-directed traditional IRAs and solo 401(k) plans or Roth solo 401(k) plans, Stoddard said.

9. Analyze Your Retirement Goals and Tradeoffs

Ultimately, early retirement isn't just about hitting a number; it's about aligning your finances with your values and the lifestyle you want to have. Fox encourages people to ask themselves why they want to retire early. In the end, an early retirement may not be the right fit for you. Cox said that retirement planning requires not "obsessing over the number" and "talking about tradeoffs."

The right plan doesn't always mean retiring early. Sometimes it means retiring smarter with more purpose, more clarity and more alignment with what matters most to you.

Jamar Champ, the estranged husband of *Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood* star Masika Kalysha, was killed in a car accident on a Houston freeway on Tuesday. He was 38.

A news release from the Houston Police Department revealed that the crash occurred shortly after midnight local time on Oct. 28, when a silver BMW heading westbound in eastbound lanes on 6600 Katy Freeway (West Interstate Highway 10) struck a silver Tesla Cybertruck head-on. The impact caused the BMW to catch on fire, and the Tesla to collide with a blue Freightliner 18-wheeler.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant R. Dallas and Officer R. Young reported that the driver of the BMW was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the driver of the Tesla was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

Champ's family later confirmed his identity as the driver of the Tesla to KHOU 11.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured, according to HPD.

Kalysha confirmed Champ's death in several social media posts, including an emotional statement to The Shade Room. "It is with profound sadness that I confirm the news of the tragic and unexpected passing of my spouse and father of my beautiful daughters, Jamar Champ," she wrote. "During this incredibly challenging time, I kindly ask for respect and understanding as our family comes together to support one another and honor his memory."

Kalysha and Champ tied the knot in 2021 and share daughter, 3-year-old Amari. The reality star also has a daughter, Khari Barbie Maxwell, with rapper Fetty Wap.

On Tuesday, Kalysha seemingly alluded to Champ's death in a post on X. "God woke me up at 2:00am... I couldn't sleep," she wrote. "I didn't know why. Jesus Christ I just received the worse news of my life. Pray for me and my kids please."

The next day, she shared a tribute to Champ on her Instagram page. "I'm so mad at the driver that took your life. I've never felt this much anger and pain and confusion all at once," Kalysha captioned the video of Champ that featured clips of the former North Dakota State University football player with their children.

"All you wanted was your baby and to be a Godly family man. We found out about @amarihermes on his 35th bday. I was 4.5 months pregnant and had no idea. @1of1champ4x smiled from ear to ear my entire pregnancy," she continued. "No matter what you go through with a person, you never want this. You always think you have more time. 💔 "

Kalysha previously revealed that she and Champ were in the process of a divorce after being "separated" for "all of 2023."

In 2024, she said during an interview that she was "going through mediation" with her "soon-to-be-ex-husband."**

Some *Saturday Night Live* sketches bomb and others become Hall of Famers. But according to Amy Poehler, only one was so bad that it literally put its host to sleep.

While reuniting with fellow *SNL* alum Kate McKinnon, Poehler delved into the subject of sketches that just don't work — and without naming names, had a pretty embarrassing story to pull from.

"Did you ever go on the server and watch sketches that bombed?" she asked McKinnon on Tuesday's episode of her *Good Hang* podcast. "Do you kind of like it when sketches bomb a little bit? We used to go and watch our sketches from dress [rehearsal] that bombed and just watch it together, process it together. And it was just, like, such a nice feeling. Basically, just a reminder that everybody bombs, basically."

McKinnon, already laughing at the memory of this, nodded. "There were a few hits that we would watch over and over again," she admitted. "There was one rehearsal where a person — I won't say who — simply stopped doing the sketch and sat down on the stage. That was a fun watch."

This sparked a memory for Poehler, who could relate. "We had a host, I won't say who, who just halfway through just kinda fell asleep a little bit," she said with a smile. "This was during dress, and it was like, 'Okay, I guess his character's asleep now.'"

Poehler couldn't agree more. Earlier this month, the *SNL* alum celebrated a full-circle moment, hosting the show for the first time in over a decade on the very evening that marked *SNL*'s 50th anniversary. Fun as it was, Poehler told McKinnon that part of her still wanted to be participating as a cast member.

"I kept being like, 'What are you guys doing over there?' Like, I kept wanting to be over there," she recalled.

Both Poehler and McKinnon had standout runs on *SNL*, with Poehler starring on the show from 2001 to 2008, while McKinnon joined in 2012 and stuck around until 2022. Poehler hosted the show in 2015 and the alums both participated in the show's 50th anniversary special. Their conversation saw Poehler praise McKinnon for her run on the show, pointing out that she quickly found her place in the fabric of *SNL*.

"There are people on that show that I felt were naturals. Now whether or not they felt natural is their own personal story," Poehler said. "But you, Maya Rudolph, Dana Carvey, Will Ferrell — people who just kind of came onto the show, fit right in and became, like, instant captains. I always felt that from you, just this calm confidence when you were performing. And it's interesting to know that inside you were not feeling that way."

Indeed, McKinnon confirmed that "there were plenty of desperate failures that haunt me even now," but added that her time on *SNL* remains a dream come true.

"I feel like I had one dream. It was *SNL*," McKinnon shared. "Did it. Done. Loved it. Awesome."

Jordon Hudson knows how to laugh at herself.

Hudson, 24, celebrated Halloween on Friday, Oct. 31, by channeling herself for her costume.

In an Instagram post, she could be seen wearing the same outfit she wore during a viral interview with CBS Sunday Morning earlier this year, when she shut down journalist Tony Dokoupil's question about how she and boyfriend Bill Belichick met.

"The costume I never seem to be able to take off," Hudson captioned her social media post.

While Hudson dressed up in her clever attire, Belichick spent Halloween guiding his UNC Chapel Hill football players during their away game against Syracuse University.

Since the college football season started in September, the former cheerleader has supported her boyfriend by attending the North Carolina team's games across the country. On Friday, Oct. 17, Hudson was spotted in Berkeley, Calif., where the Tar Heels lost to UC Berkeley's California Golden Bears.

Hudson has made a habit of dressing up for the occasions, whether she's sporting Tar Heel blue or accessorizing in response to media buzz.

On Sept. 1, when Belichick made his UNC coaching debut, Hudson wore a purse that was stuffed with crumpled-up pieces of paper.

In photos of her at the game, multiple angles appeared to show that the papers were the only contents of Hudson's bag. Some of the papers seemed to show highlighted words, though they couldn't be made out clearly.

Like with her game-day sideline style, Hudson's also established herself as a fan of all-out Halloween costumes, and she's already collaborated with Belichick on spooky season ensembles.

Last year, the pair — who have a 49-year age gap — paid homage to the New England coast with a joint costume, as seen in Instagram photos shared by Hudson.

The six-time Super Bowl-winning coach wore a fisherman's garb, complete with a wide-brim fishing hat, a heavy-duty raincoat, jeans and boots. Belichick also held onto a fishing rod. Meanwhile, his girlfriend donned scaled bottoms mimicking a mermaid fin and jewels around her neck for a top.

Hudson appeared to be laughing as Belichick smiled for the camera. "Ouucchhhh!!! 🪝," she wrote alongside her set of photos.

Gen Z faces challenges previous generations never did — and the all-consuming nature of social media has left many young men "scared" to date.

Eli Thompson, a recent high school graduate, told Rolling Stone that Gen Z men feel frustrated — even petrified — by the idea of putting themselves out there, saying the possibility of being recorded and mocked has made "normal interactions feel risky."

Thompson wrote that dating challenges and other trends in social media culture "encourage people to document embarrassing moments."

"It changed how young men conducted themselves in real life," he wrote. "The threat of public shaming makes normal interactions risky and at times can lessen the chance young men will pursue relationships or go on dates."

"Constant fear of embarrassment can leave some young men too hesitant to take the social risks needed for dating. The fear of online exposure doesn't just stop certain young men from asking girls out — it can plant seeds of resentment that threaten to fracture gender relations for a long time," Thompson continued.

Unorthodox Singles Program Aims To Put 'The Feels' Back In Modern Dating

Dating can be perilous for Gen Z with the possibility of being recorded and shamed online.

Thompson's view is not unique. Men across social media have shared frustrations about the modern dating landscape.

From filming "get ready with me" videos before dates to recording during dinner, women have shared their romantic experiences online — a move Thompson said is "fueling mistrust in many young men and turning interactions into battlegrounds."

While the consequences of this new normal vary, one study found 37% of Gen Z identify as celibate. Among them, 68% of men cited inflation as a reason, while 64% of women blamed political differences.

Thompson said Gen Z men now "second-guess every word or message, wondering how it might be judged, shared, or mocked," searching online for other people in the digital realm to "reinforce negative stereotypes about girls."

"This causes a Cold War among genders where each side is suspicious of each other and doesn't have empathy. In these divided spaces, interactions become games of defensive accusation and people grow untrustworthy," he continued. "This creates an unchecked culture of humiliation, and makes the social media world for Gen Z a place where accountability is absent and cruelty is rewarded."

"We need to establish consequences for digital cruelty," Thompson wrote. "Cruelty behind a screen is no less harmful than cruelty in person, and we need to send that message loud and clear."
