Two girls were rushed to the hospital after they were thrown from a Ferris wheel at the Harvest Festival in New Roads, La., according to the Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Rene' Thibodeaux said that the girls were riding the attraction on Saturday, Nov. 1, when they were suddenly ejected from the ride, per WAFB, Louisiana First New and Fox 10 News. One of the victims was airlifted to a Baton Rouge hospital. Details about the girls' conditions have not been released.
Following the incident, Thibodeaux stated that all rides at the festival were closed for inspection until they could be cleared by the Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office. While the attraction and its adjacent slide ride have been shut down, the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal said it is continuing to investigate the situation, per WAFB.
The Harvest Festival did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
The annual fall festival, which runs from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, is touted as a "fun-filled family event" that takes place on Main Street in New Roads. According to the festival's website, it features "delicious food and exciting rides," while dedicating funds to "supporting the local agriculture-based community."
One witness who attended the festival, Eddie Jones, said he was moments away from stepping on the Ferris wheel when he saw the tragic incident unfold.
"We were in line to buy tickets to the Ferris wheel, and I heard a girl scream," he told WAFB, adding that he saw the two girls on the steel platform below the Ferris wheel with what appeared to be blood on them. "I looked over, and the Ferris wheel car was kicked over. I don't know how it got in that position, but it was stuck."

"Yeah, I'll probably never get on another Ferris wheel," he added. "It should not have stuck like that — they had a major malfunction. Someone didn't do something right, that's for sure."

Another witness, Ronald Brasseaux, told the outlet that he rode the Ferris wheel the night before the incident and didn't feel safe. "It was cracking, like they need to take this down," he said. "When the Ferris wheel goes, it's supposed to, like the things [carts] are supposed to swing with it, but it got stuck, and so as it was going around, it was just like stuck at an angle when they flipped out of it."
