Adam Spatacco, The Motley FoolOctober 25, 2025 at 6:00 AM

0

Key Points -

Investors are pouring unprecedented sums into quantum computing stocks.

However, many popular quantum computing stocks are speculative companies as opposed to the usual, megacap beneficiaries from the artificial intelligence (AI) boom.

D-Wave Quantum is an interesting quantum AI stock, and its popularity rhymes with that of the rise of Nvidia over the last few years.

10 stocks we like better than D-Wave Quantum ›

As investors hunt for the next Nvidia, attention is shifting toward quantum computing -- a field that could mark the next major leap in processing power.

D-Wave Quantum (NYSE: QBTS) stands out as one of the few public companies focused on building practical quantum computers -- machines designed to tackle problems that are simply beyond the capabilities of today's classical systems.

Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now, when you join Stock Advisor. See the stocks »

The question for investors is whether comparing D-Wave to Nvidia is a bold insight -- or the start of another speculative bubble.

What D-Wave is trying to solve -- and why it matters

D-Wave's mission is to commercialize quantum annealing technology, a specialized form of quantum computing designed to tackle optimization problems -- the kind of complex challenges that involve countless independent variables, such as supply chain logistics, portfolio risk management, or traffic routing.

Unlike traditional computers that rely on binary bits, quantum systems use qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously. This property, known as superposition, enables quantum machines to evaluate vast numbers of possible outcomes at once -- providing a theoretical edge over even the fastest GPUs on the planet.

As AI workloads grow exponentially, the limits of classical computing -- even with Nvidia's most advanced chips -- will eventually run into physical and economic constraints. Quantum computing offers a potential way around those barriers, solving in seconds what might take today's supercomputers thousands of years.

If successful, D-Wave's technology could transform industries ranging from drug discovery and energy exploration to cybersecurity and AI model optimization. The company is already collaborating with partners across defense, automotive, and blockchain sectors to explore real-world applications through its platform.

Quantum computing qubits processing.

Could D-Wave be the next Nvidia?

Any comparison between D-Wave and Nvidia stems from their shared position at the forefront of computational innovation. Just as Nvidia's GPUs ignited the AI revolution, D-Wave's systems aim to spark the next wave: quantum acceleration.

The company's revenue growth has been eye-catching, with triple-digit percentage gains year over year. That momentum has fueled retail investor enthusiasm and social media buzz reminiscent of the early days of AI investing.

QBTS Revenue (TTM) Chart

QBTS Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts

Yet the absolute numbers tell a more measured story. D-Wave's quarterly revenue still sits in the single-digit millions, and its operating losses remain substantial. During the second quarter, the company reported just $3.1 million in revenue and an operating loss of $26.5 million.

The company continues to rely heavily on capital raises to fund operations -- a strategy that inevitably dilutes existing shareholders. In essence, while Nvidia's narrative is one of compounding profitability, D-Wave's is still a fight for commercial validation and financial sustainability.

Nvidia spent decades refining its architecture, cultivating a vast developer ecosystem, and building out software frameworks like CUDA -- all of which now form the backbone of modern AI computing. D-Wave, by contrast, is still proving both its technical advantage and business model in a domain that remains largely experimental.

The hype may rhyme, but the fundamentals couldn't be more different.

Nvidia headquarters with logo.

The verdict: Breakthrough potential or meme stock?

Could D-Wave become the next Nvidia? It's not impossible -- but the odds are slim. For that to happen, the company would need to demonstrate that its quantum annealing systems can outperform classical supercomputers on commercially meaningful applications, scale revenue fast enough to offset steep losses, and do so before competition and dilution erode its runway.

For now, profitability remains distant, and D-Wave's technology may take years -- if not decades -- to reach mainstream utility. Unlike Nvidia, whose chips are indispensable to AI workloads today, D-Wave is selling access to a technology still validating its relevance. That makes the stock fertile ground for traders chasing volatility, but a risky bet for long-term investors seeking reliable compounding returns.

QBTS Chart

QBTS data by YCharts

Ultimately, D-Wave is a fascinating moonshot at the frontier of computing -- a company that could redefine what's possible if quantum technology fulfills its promise. But calling it the "next Nvidia" is premature at best and misleading at worst.

Until its revenue growth accelerates and cash burn stabilizes, D-Wave remains a high-risk curiosity within the AI ecosystem -- one that's better suited for speculating meme traders than for patient investors seeking durable, Nvidia-like growth.

Should you invest $1,000 in D-Wave Quantum right now?

Target is tightening its belt due to slow sales, announcing the biggest round of layoffs the company has had in a decade. The news comes at the worst time for the affected employees, who may have to get through the holiday season without a job. Here's what to know about the Target layoffs and how the changes will affect shoppers.

Why Is Target Laying Off Employees?

Anthony C. / Yelp

Despite Target's slumping sales, the company claims that the corporate layoffs are not to cut costs. Instead, in a memo announcing the layoffs by incoming CEO Michael Fiddelke, the reason is that "the complexity we've created over time has been holding us back. Too many layers and overlapping work have slowed decisions, making it harder to bring ideas to life."

The goal is to enable the "progress and growth" the company needs by eliminating some of the corporate red tape that can hinder flexibility and quick actions by a large corporation.

How Much Have Target's Sales Dropped?

Sundry Photography/istockphoto

Despite the company's official reason, it's impossible to ignore that Target's sales have been dropping significantly for three straight quarters.

Earlier this year, the company announced it was pulling back on its DEI programs and initiatives, something the retailer had always touted as a priority in the past. That angered many customers, who decided to spend their money elsewhere.

According to an earnings report published in August, Target's second-quarter comparable sales dropped 1.9%, and its operating income was 19.4% lower than last year. The company's stock price has fallen 30% this year alone and 65% from its 2021 high.

How Many People Are Getting Laid Off?

hapabapa/istockphoto

Target is going to lay off 1,000 corporate employees. Additionally, 800 open positions will be closed, meaning no one will be hired to fill those roles. In total, the layoffs will affect about 8% of Target's global corporate workforce.

Employees affected by the cuts will receive notice on October 28, according to the memo. They'll get pay and benefits through January 3, 2026, and will also receive severance packages.

Will This Affect My Target Store?

Marvin Samuel Tolentino Pineda/istockphoto

If you're used to shopping at Target regularly, or plan to do so for some holiday shopping, don't worry. The layoffs are only happening at the corporate level. The company emphasized that none of the affected roles are at Target stores or other supply chain locations. So you won't have to worry about whether your store will be open extended hours before Christmas or if a gift you order online will get to you in time to put it under the tree.

 • Wall Street hits records following an encouraging update on inflation

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks hit records on Friday after an update on inflation came in a bit less painful than feared.

The S&P 500 rose 0.8% and topped its prior all-time high, which was set earlier this month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 472 points, or 1%, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 1.1%. Both also set records.

The data on inflation is encouraging because it could mean less pain for lower- and middle-income households struggling with still-high increases in prices every month. Even more importantly for Wall Street, it could also clear the way for the Federal Reserve to keep cutting interest rates in hopes of giving a boost to the slowing job market.

The Fed just cut its main interest rate last month for the first time this year, but it's been hesitant to promise more relief because lower rates can make inflation worse, beyond goosing the economy and prices for investments. Following the inflation report, traders continue to bet on a near certainty that the Fed will cut rates at its next two meetings, including one next week.

"Right now, Fed officials are more concerned about the labor market than about inflation," according to Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management. "Without any evidence to the contrary, there's nothing to really change their minds about cutting."

Stocks had been shaky in recent weeks following a tremendous rally of 35% for the S&P 500 from a low in April. Criticism climbed that stocks became too expensive after their prices rose much faster than corporate profits. Worries also flared about potentially bad loans that banks made following a period of calm that may have encouraged too much risk-taking. And President Donald Trump rattled markets after threatening much higher tariffs on China, the world's second-largest economy.

But stocks have rebounded each time, only to push higher. Banks have characterized the industry's hiccups as just a collection of one-offs, while Trump is set to meet China's leader, Xi Jinping, at a conference next week.

And most big U.S. companies are reporting stronger profits for the latest quarter than analysts expected, as is usually the case.

Ford Motor revved 12.2% higher to lead all companies in the S&P 500 after the automaker topped analysts' expectations for profit in the latest quarter. The company said its business is running at the high end of its forecasted range for financial performance this year that it set out in February.

Intel added 0.3% after reporting profit for the latest quarter that blew past analysts' expectations. CEO Lip-Bu Tan credited the artificial-intelligence boom with "accelerating demand for compute and creating attractive opportunities."

Google's parent company climbed 2.7% after Anthropic announced an expansion worth tens of billions of dollars, through which it would increase usage of Google cloud technologies for its AI chatbot, Claude. Given its massive size, Alphabet was one of the strongest forces lifting the S&P 500 index, along with other AI beneficiaries like Nvidia.

Procter & Gamble's profit beat analysts' forecasts, despite what CEO Jon Moeller called "a challenging consumer and geopolitical environment," and the stock of the company behind the Charmin, Oral-B and Pampers brands rose 0.9%.

They helped offset a drop for Newmont Mining, which fell 6.2% even though it also reported a stronger profit than expected.

The miner's stock came into the day with a stunning gain of nearly 139% for the year so far, thanks to the surging price of gold. But gold's run has stalled in the past few days since setting its latest record.

No investment's price goes up forever, and criticism had been growing that gold's price had gone too far, too fast after it shot up even more than the U.S. stock market.

Many of the same factors that attracted buyers to gold this year are still there, including concerns about the mountains of debt that the U.S. and other governments worldwide are amassing. The U.S. government's gross national debt topped $38 trillion this week, and the worry is that a continued acceleration will only worsen inflation.

All told, the S&P 500 rose 53.25 points to 6,791.69. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 472.51 to 47,207.12, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 263.07 to 23,204.87.

In stock markets abroad, indexes rose across much of Europe and Asia. South Korea's Kospi jumped 2.5%, and Japan's Nikkei 225 rallied 1.4% for two of the world's bigger moves.

In the bond market, Treasury yields held relatively steady, as the inflation solidified already high expectations for coming cuts to rates by the Fed. The yield on the 10-year Treasury edged down to 3.99% from 4.01% late Thursday.

A report from the University of Michigan on Friday also said expectations for inflation among U.S. consumers remains mixed. Such numbers are important because expectations for high inflation can encourage behavior that pushes inflation even higher, creating a vicious cycle.

___

AP Writers Teresa Cerojano and Matt Ott contributed.

Kylie Jenner is flaunting a new haircut and a sporty side fans can't stop talking about.

The 28-year-old mother of two shared on Instagram Thursday a series of photos of herself in a burgundy sports bra and shorts workout set with a matching Alo duffel bag. She captioned the photo, which was a joint Instagram with Alo, "fall in california @alo."

Still, not everyone was on board with the new campaign. Jenner drew criticism earlier this month after posting a short Instagram clip showing her walking handcuffed down a jail hallway surrounded by officers as part of a promo for the King Kylie relaunch.

Some social media users called the imagery "out of touch," pointing to ongoing ICE raids and protests across the country and saying the video felt tone-deaf amid renewed conversations about law enforcement.

Malcolm in the Middle fans were excited to see Frankie Munizreunite with his onscreen brothersChristopher Masterson and Justin Berfield in a new photo until some started worrying that Berfield didn't look well.

"I was told not to post this yet, but then I remembered the theme song," Muniz, 39, wrote alongside the image shared via Instagram on Thursday, October 23. "I'm just too excited for y'all to see the new episodes and I miss my brothers."

RELATED: Frankie Muniz Reunites With 'Malcolm in the Middle' Parents After Nearly 20 Years

In the photo, Muniz stood alongside Masterson, 45, and Berfield, 39, outside what appeared to be a studio building. All three were smiling at the camera and dressed casually in sweaters and jeans, with Muniz in a gray zip-up, Masterson in dark green, and Berfield in navy. While the reunion shot seemed cheerful at first glance, some fans in the comments quickly zeroed in on Berfield's appearance, saying he looked noticeably thinner than they remembered.

"He got a lot more skinny than he was during the show!!" one person wrote, while another added, "He looks hella different."

Others said they "didn't even recognize him," but several people came to Berfield's defense.

"Not sure why people are commenting about Justin's looks…the dude is 40 in a few months," one fan wrote. "He looks like a 40 year old. Lol like is he supposed to look 15 still?"

A post shared by Frankie Muniz (@frankiemuniz4)

Another person chimed in and said, "He looks great guys, it's been almost 20 years."

Berfield starred as Reese for all 151 episodes of Malcolm in the Middle from 2000-2006. After the show's run, he largely stepped away from being in front of the camera and pivoted to producing instead. By 2010 had become Chief Creative Officer of Virgin Produced, the entertainment department of the Virgin Group, where he helped develop and package films including Limitless and Bad Moms. When news broke of the show's upcoming revival he was ready to return. In February, he confirmed he would reprise the role of Reese and it marked his first on-screen acting credit in nearly two decades.

RELATED: 'Malcolm in the Middle' Star Pursuing Harvard Degree

The revival of Malcolm in the Middle, titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair, will be a four-episode miniseries on Disney+ that reunites most of the original Wilkerson family, including Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek, two decades after the original ended. Unfortunately, Erik Per Sullivan who played Dewey in the original series won't be reprising his role. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark has been recast as the character.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Defenseman Mattias Samuelsson scored twice and the Buffalo Sabres snapped a five-game skid against the rival Toronto Maple Leafs with a 5-3 victory Friday night.

Alex Tuch's short-handed breakaway goal with 3:01 left sealed the win, and came immediately after Buffalo goalie Alex Lyon stopped Matias Maccelli's one-timer in front.

The teams meet again in Toronto on Saturday night.

Tuch, Tage Thompson and Jiri Kulich had a goal and assist each in an outing the Sabres never trailed. Lyon made 29 saves.

Buffalo has won four of five since an 0-3 start.

William Nylander, Auston Matthews and Dakota Joshua scored for Toronto, which dropped to 0-2-1 in its past three. Nylander, who has two goals and eight assists over a five-game point streak, did not return after leaving the ice with about five minutes left in regulation.

Anthony Stolarz finished with 25 saves.

For Samuelsson, it was the first multi-goal game of his career, and after scoring just seven times in his previous 217 NHL games. Buffalo's last win over Toronto was a 9-3 decision at home on Dec. 21, 2023.

After squandering two one-goal leads in the opening period, Buffalo broke the game open with a two-goal second period. Thompson scored on a give-and-go with Bowen Byram 7:20 in. Samuelsson then scored his second on a snap shot from the left circle at the 13:10 mark.

Toronto was minus two top defenseman with Chris Tanev (upper body) on IR and Morgan Rielly (undisclosed).

The Maple Leafs announced earlier in the day goalie Joseph Woll is rejoining the team following a month-long leave of absence due to a personal family matter. Under league rules regarding players on long-term IR, the fifth-year player is eligible to resume playing on Nov. 1.
