FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Don Garber says he's going to look back on his time as Major League Soccer commissioner, and not believe he had Lionel Messi in his league.

Garber is ecstatic Messi, who joined Inter Miami in July 2023, re-signed on a three-year contract extension to remain with the club through 2028. Messi's contract was set to expire at the end of the 2025 season.

Garber presented Messi with the MLS Golden Boot award, for leading the league with 29 goals in 28 games during the regular season, before Inter Miami hosted Nashville SC in Game 1 of their best-of-three, first-round series in the MLS Cup playoffs on Friday, Oct. 24.

Messi hoisted the trophy above his head, then jogged back toward the locker room area before the national anthem began.

— Inter Miami CF (@InterMiamiCF) October 25, 2025

"I think he's the unicorn of unicorns. There's something about the way he's wired in ways where you look at him, and he's thinking about the game like nobody else ever has. His intensity and desire to win is what makes him the greatest of all time," Garber said during a media briefing before the match.

"There are a lot of really competitive players. But he has this special sauce, this dynamic that has him so focused on doing what he needs to do to win games. He doesn't ever want to come out of the game. He'll travel wherever he needs to travel. He'll still do what he needs to do for his team off the field. That's why he's the G.O.A.T."

Garber and Messi have apparently made up since their tiff earlier this season, when the commissioner suspended the Argentine World Cup champion for skipping the MLS All-Star Game in July.

The two have had many conversations and interactions since, including Garber placing a medal around Messi's neck when Inter Miami fell to the Seattle Sounders in the Leagues Cup tournament final in August.

"He certainly seems pretty happy when he's scoring goals the way he did. And he'll be very happy to get the Golden Boot. Maybe, there are more awards coming for him in this year," Garber said, regarding the MVP award.

Garber credited Inter Miami managing co-owner Jorge Mas for his work on the deal to keep Messi with the club. The club is also co-owned by Jose Mas and David Beckham, while Messi will become a co-owner upon retirement.

"I don't think we ever could have imagined that Leo would have been able to deliver for this club, for this city, and for this league the way he had. He has reset the trajectory for Major League Soccer, and we were already doing pretty well," Garber said.

"I think having three more years is just going to be another gift. Hopefully, it's the gift that keeps on giving. It's been just a thrill to watch him play and to see how happy he is here in Miami and here in the United States."

Purdue goes into the 2025-26 college basketball season with the biggest possible bullseye across its chest.

The Boilermakers enter their Nov. 4 season opener at home against Evansville ranked No. 1 in the preseason for the first time in program history. It's easy to see why: Their best players are back in unanimous preseason All-American Braden Smith and forward Trey Kaufman-Renn, who joined Smith on some All-America lists.

"Being ranked No. 1 in the preseason is a great indicator of what we feel this team can accomplish," said Purdue coach Matt Painter. "But the goal is to be No. 1 at the end of the year. We're thrilled that people think this highly of our team, but there is a long way to go and a lot of work to do to reach that goal in April."

Smith, Kaufman-Renn and 3-point sharpshooter Fletcher Loyer give the Boilermakers, who went 24-12 last season and lost to Houston in a regional semifinal, a veteran nucleus that has seen about everything there is to see in the sport.

Smith, who averaged career highs in scoring (15.8 points per game), assists (8.7) and steals (2.2) last season, needs 125 points and 242 assists to become the first Division I player to notch 1,500 points, 1,000 assists and 500 rebounds.

Kaufman-Renn pumped in a team-high 20.1 ppg last season, connected on just under 60 percent of his field-goal tries and grabbed 6.5 rebounds. Loyer chipped in a career-high 13.8 ppg and sank 44.4 percent of his 3-pointers.

Purdue added more bulk in the offseason with the addition of South Dakota State transfer Oscar Cluff, who averaged 17.6 points and 12.3 rebounds last season while hitting 63.4 percent of his field-goal attempts. The 6-foot-11 Cluff has beaten out 7-4 Daniel Jacobsen, who was off to a promising start last season until breaking his tibia in the second game.

As for Evansville, it's coming off an 11-21 season that saw it lose in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament as the 10th seed. The Purple Aces return a pair of starters, both up front.

Center Connor Turnbull averaged 1.9 blocked shots per game last season in earning MVC Defensive Player of the Year honors. He's also the top returning scorer at 9.2 ppg, while Joshua Hughes chipped in 7.2 ppg and rejected 1.1 shots per game, fifth in the league.

Evansville lost its top player from 2024-25 to the transfer portal. Point guard Tayshawn Comer, who scored 16.2 ppg and dished out 4.1 assists to earn second-team All-MVC honors, wound up at Nevada.

"We had a decent amount of departures, which is becoming the norm in mid-major basketball, but I feel like we have the deepest team we've had since I've been here," said fourth-year coach David Ragland. "We want to play free-flowing and getting to the next play."

Ragland has emphasized getting bigger during his tenure, and this team will be able to match up physically with most foes, at least on paper. The addition of Saint Louis transfer AJ Casey means his front line could stand 6-9 (Casey), 6-10 (Hughes) and 6-10 (Turnbull).

Who is coaching Trail Blazers with Chauncey Billups on leave? Tiago Splitter takes over

Jon Hoefling, USA TODAY October 25, 2025 at 3:14 AM

0

A gambling scandal left NBA fans with their mouths agape and the Portland Trail Blazers without their head coach. Former NBA champion Tiago Splitter is taking the reins in the Pacific Northwest as the Blazers' interim head coach, and his first game is Friday night.

His adversary is no easy foe, though. The Golden State Warriors are 2-0 on the season and are fresh off a 137-131 win over the Denver Nuggets Thursday night. Although Denver's Aaron Gordon dropped 50 in that game, the Warriors were resilient, thanks in large part to Steph Curry dropping 42 points of his own.

Portland lost its first game of the season in what was set to be its fifth season with Billups as head coach. The team has not finished above .500 in any season under Billups.

Philadelphia 76ers center Tiago Splitter shoots against Brooklyn Nets forward Andrew Nicholson during the second half at Wells Fargo Center. The Brooklyn Nets won 141-118.Why is Tiago Splitter the Blazers' interim head coach?

Splitter is in his first season with the Blazers, serving as an assistant coach. Though he is a new addition to the club, he has lots of experience as a coach.

He served as player development coach for the Brooklyn Nets in 2019 and was respected enough to survive multiple coaching staff changes within the organization, staying on throughout the Steve Nash and Jacque Vaughn eras. He left the Nets in 2023.

Splitter joined the Houston Rockets as an assistant afterwards and took a one-year gap in Europe before coming back to the NBA in 2025.

Splitter was thrust into the interim head coaching role after Billups was arrested as part of an FBI investigation into illegal gambling. Billups was charged in connection with an illegal poker operation that allegedly had ties to the mafia.

The NBA placed Billups on "immediate leave" after he was indicted, alongside guard Terry Rozier, who was also indicted in the investigation. Billups was in court in Portland Thursday afternoon.

Tiago Splitter's comments on Chauncey Billups arrest

Ahead of Friday's game, Splitter was asked his thoughts on the FBI investigation that resulted in Billups' arrest. Splitter did not speak on the matter.

Splitter stressed that he is "focused on moving forward." He also noted that the mood in the Blazers' facility Thursday was "not good," but he is ready for what comes next.

Tiago Splitter NBA stats

Splitter spent most of his seven NBA seasons as a role player for the San Antonio Spurs, Atlanta Hawks, and Philadelphia 76ers. He was a key player on the Spurs' 2014 championship team, though, starting 50 games for the team while averaging 8.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. He averaged 7.9 points per game for his career while shooting a solid 55.5% from the field.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs will miss his second game since sustaining a concussion in an accident at home.

The Cowboys (3-3-1) ruled out Diggs for Sunday's visit to Denver (5-2). He missed last week's 44-22 victory over Washington. Diggs had the accident at home three days before that game.

Coach Brian Schottenheimer said Friday that Diggs was still in concussion protocol and the club had more information about what happened at Diggs' house. He deferred to Diggs for revealing those details.

Diggs, who was limited to a total of 13 games the previous two seasons because of major knee injuries, wasn't in the locker room when it was open to reporters Friday.

Executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones said on his radio show Friday that Diggs also was dealing with issues related to previous injuries. Schottenheimer and Jones said Diggs could go on injured reserve. He will miss at least four more games if Dallas makes that move.

Diggs was considered ahead of schedule when he played in the opener after another offseason of rehabbing a knee injury, but the 2021 All-Pro has struggled in the team's primarily zone scheme under first-year defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus.

The Cowboys can release Diggs next offseason with minimal impact on the salary cap from the $97 million, five-year extension he signed two years ago. Diggs led the NFL with 11 interceptions in his All-Pro season.

Safety Donovan Wilson will be out against the Broncos with knee and shoulder issues. He was on the injury report last week but played against the Commanders. Wilson played all 17 games in two of the previous three seasons.

Center Cooper Beebe is listed as questionable after missing five games with a foot injury.

Left tackle Tyler Guyton was added to the injury report this week with a glute issue and is listed as questionable along with safety Juanyeh Thomas, who has been dealing with migraines and didn't play against the Commanders.

Joey Nolfi is a senior writer at *. *Since 2016, his work at EW includes RuPaul's Drag Race video interviews, Oscars predictions, and more.

EW's editorial guidelines

August 20, 2020 11:00 a.m. ET

Remember Kimonogate from RuPaul's Drag Race season 8? It was an iconic fashion moment, but for all the wrong reasons. Now, alums Bob the Drag Queen and Naomi Smalls have joined EW's BINGE podcast to spill secrets on the hilarious affair — like the fact that there were almost an additional two kimonos sashaying down the runway.

"What they didn't show you was that two girls who'd been eliminated also brought kimonos," says Bob, who ultimately won the week's Snatch Game maxi challenge and Madonna-inspired runway, which caused a stir among the judging panel after most queens opted to recreate the pop icon's Japanese-inspired look from the "Nothing Really Matters" music video. "I think Naysha [Lopez] and Cynthia [Lee Fontaine brought them as well]. We all knew about Kimonogate before Kimonogate, because, once you get in the Werk Room, you're like, 'What did you bring for Madonna.... there were six girls holding up kimonos and I was like, yikes!"

Bob also claims Chi Chi DeVayne hadn't prepared a Madonna look in advance of the episode because, as the season 8 winner tells BINGE hosts Joey Nolfi and Jillian Sederholm, she didn't think she'd last through episode five of the competition. "Chi Chi made her outfit there that day, or she didn't make one at all. I think we asked what she brought for Madonna snd she was like 'Girl, I ain't bring notting.... I didn't know I was gonna make it this far!' So she made that cone bra in the Werk Room that day!"

Another garment that turned heads on the season 8 runway was Fontaine's mesh running shorts, which she wore atop a pair of roller skates (and under a cowgirl hat) for one of the worst-received ensembles in the show's history.

"My brain just gets transported back to red basketball shorts," Smalls says of recalling her time on season 8. "What they didn't show on TV were those shorts, she covered up the Nike checkmark with rhinestones!"

"When she put the shorts on, I remember specifically Naomi looking at me across the room, me of all people, like, I was like girl, I don't know, girl!" Bob says with a laugh, adding that the eventual Miss Congeniality winner could've saved herself from critiques of doom if she'd simply worn the rest of the outfit she had with her. "Cynthia is interesting, she had this top, like a chiffon or taffeta top, if I recall correctly, and she had these taffeta pants or some kind of outfit to go on the bottom, but she just didn't put it on, and I don't know why!"

But, as Bob says, Fontaine wasn't the only queen who opted for athleisure on the main stage.

"It is a known fact that RuPaul's dresses are in two chunks. Sometimes she'll work the runway and take off all of her padding and put on some sweatpants and Ugg slippers and walk around the studio. Everyone knows this. RuPaul gets out of drag from the waist down to sit behind the table, which I would, too!" Bob fondly recalls of the long hours RuPaul puts in while wearing multiple hats (and gowns) on set. "We cut for break.... one day RuPaul just got up and said 'I just want you motherf---ers to know I'm still in full drag!' so she gets up and starts runwaying across, back and forth, in front of the stage.... we started cheering and clapping because it was really funny!"

Finally, Smalls wraps the season 8 recap with another warm memory of RuPaul from the finale.

"I always think about when we had to do our finale walk situation with Ru down the runway, and we had to hold her hand and stand next to her," explains Smalls. "I remember my first thought was, it was my first time standing next to her in full drag, and I was like, 'Oh, we're like the same height! Perfect, you don't have that on me!'"

EW's BINGE podcast on RuPaul's Drag Race — available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you find your favorite shows — returns next Thursday with Peppermint and Sasha Velour for a full season 9 recap on Lady Gaga's guest appearance and that time a PA accidentally forgot Pep at the holding hotel.
Reagan Foundation becomes the latest US institution drawn into Donald Trump's controversies

BILL BARROW and THALIA BEATY Sat, October 25, 2025 at 12:57 AM GMT+2 6 min read

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is drawing a volatile mix of blowback and praise for arguing that a Canadian government advertisement playing in U.S. markets misrepresented the 40th president's words to blast President Donald Trump's tariff policies.

It is not clear how the California-based Reagan Foundation decided to enter the fray over the ad, which was purchased by Ontario Premier Doug Ford and used portions of a 1987 Reagan speech on trade in which he questioned the wisdom of using tariffs as economic policy. But shortly after the foundation said on social media that the ad misused "selective audio" of the former president, Trump cited the foundation when, in his own social media critique, he threatened to stop all trade with America's northern neighbor and blasted the ad as unduly interfering in U.S. politics.

The foundation statement seemingly aligned Reagan, a free-trade acolyte, with Trump, a protectionist who has flouted decades of U.S. policy with high border taxes, including on goods from top U.S. trading partners. The foundation, which helps support the Reagan Presidential Library & Museum, also suggested it could take legal action against Ontario's provincial government, which sponsored the ad.

Reagan's speech is included in millions of administration records governed by the Presidential Record Act signed in 1981 by his predecessor, President Jimmy Carter. That law puts presidential remarks in the public domain, meaning no one must seek permission from presidential foundations or libraries to redistribute them.

Ford said Friday that the ad would be phased out so the U.S. and Canadian administrations can resume trade talks. He said the ad had achieved its goal but would continue to air during the first two games of the World Series.

'Easily intimidated by a call from the White House'

The backlash on social media was explosive, immediate and far from unanimous.

"Incredible cynicism and betrayal of Reagan by his own foundation," Paul Novosad, a Dartmouth College economist, wrote on X. Novosad said anyone who followed the foundation's advice to listen to Reagan's full remarks "would see he says exactly what the Ontario ad claims."

Jason Kenney, a former Canadian cabinet minister in a Conservative government, questioned the leadership of the Reagan Foundation on X. He said the entity had been "easily intimidated by a call from the White House, yet another sign of the hugely corrosive influence of Trump on the American conservative movement."

Trump supporters countered on social media with echoes of the president's assertions and accusations that Canada was meddling in U.S. politics.

Story Continues

Foundation staff did not respond to questions about how it has handled the matter. But one board member said in a brief interview that he knew nothing about the statement and had not been asked to participate in any deliberations ahead of its release.

"There may have been discussions about it, but I wasn't a part of any of them," Bradford Freeman, a private equity executive, told the AP.

White House press secretary Karolina Leavitt also did not immediately respond when asked via email whether the White House or anyone on the president's behalf asked the Reagan Foundation to intervene.

Several other board members also did not reply to AP inquiries.

An atypical role for a presidential foundation

At the least, the developments represent an unusually tense application of the foundation's typical mission, which is to buttress Reagan's legacy. The situation also highlights the foundation as the latest U.S. establishment institution to be drawn into the controversies of Trump's aggressive second administration.

Trump previously has elicited policy concessions from multiple U.S. universities, including elite public and private schools, after withholding or threatening to withhold federal funding. Presidents at Columbia University and the University of Virginia resigned as the Trump administration pressured their institutions.

Some U.S. corporations voluntarily rolled back diversity initiatives. More recently, high-profile firms including Amazon, Apple, Coinbase, Comcast, Google, Lockheed Martin and Meta Platforms have agreed to help finance the ballroom Trump plans for the White House after ordering the building's East Wing to be demolished. Many of those firms have regulatory business before Trump's administration.

On Truth Social, Trump called the Canadian ad "fake," despite the TV spot featuring clear audio excerpts from Reagan's April 25, 1987, radio address.

"CANADA CHEATED AND GOT CAUGHT!!! They fraudulently took a big buy ad saying that Ronald Reagan did not like Tariffs, when actually he LOVED TARIFFS FOR OUR COUNTRY, AND ITS NATIONAL SECURITY," he posted Friday.

Reagan used the radio address to explain why he was imposing targeted levies on some Japanese products as leverage in the countries' trade dispute over computer chips.

That gives Trump and his backers a hook to argue that Reagan might not oppose at least some of the current president's moves on trade. Yet Trump has imposed tariffs, often at unusually high rates, far more broadly than Reagan and other recent U.S. administrations. And even while explaining his Japan policy, Reagan spent much of the 1987 speech – less than 10 minutes long – emphasizing that he remained an opponent of tariffs, a characterization the Ontario ad appeared to accurately represent.

Reagan's speech affirmed his broad tariff opposition

"Throughout the world there's a growing realization that the way to prosperity for all nations is rejecting protectionist legislation and promoting fair and free competition," Reagan said.

He expounded:

"You see, at first, when someone says, 'Let's impose tariffs on foreign imports,' it looks like they're doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes for a short while it works -- but only for a short time.

"What eventually occurs is: First, homegrown industries start relying on government protection in the form of high tariffs. They stop competing and stop making the innovative management and technological changes they need to succeed in world markets. And then, while all this is going on, something even worse occurs. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. The result is more and more tariffs, higher and higher trade barriers, and less and less competition.

"So, soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs that subsidize inefficiency and poor management, people stop buying. Then the worst happens: Markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs."

Drew Barrymore is reflecting on how her two-year stay at a rehabilitation facility as a young teen changed her life.

During Friday's episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the Emmy winner sat down with Mae Martin, who uses they/them pronouns, to discuss their recently released Netflix series, Wayward. The thriller — which stars Alyvia Alyn Lind, Sidney Topliffe, and Toni Collette — follows two friends who attend an academy for trouble teens and is loosely inspired by Martin's real-life friend Nicole, who was "sent to one of these troubled teen institutes" for two years.

"I also was someone who got taken away and put in a place for two years," Barrymore said. To which Martin responded, "I did not know that. I mean, I know that you were a wayward teen — as was I, and I was in rehab and stuff — but I didn't know that you were at one of those places."

In a 2015 interview with The Guardian, Barrymore revealed that she underwent an 18-month stint at a rehabilitation facility for drug and alcohol addiction at age 13. She told the outlet that her younger self "really was alone" at the time "and it felt… terrible. It was a really rebellious time. I would run off. I was very, very angry."

While speaking with Martin, Barrymore explained that she knew that they had a real understanding of what it was like to reside in one such facility. "I didn't know that about you, but watching the show there was way too much accuracy," she said. "It was too real for me in that element where I knew there was no way you weren't telling an authentic perspective."

Martin confirmed that they were 16 when they entered their respective facility. "And I don't know about you," they said, "but now, as an adult, I feel so protective of young people and having had that experience of being pathologized at a very young age for things that are just kind of… yeah, I think that all went into it."

Turning to the audience, Martin quickly clarified that Wayward itself is not a heavy watch despite its serious subject matter.

"No it's not!" Barrymore agreed. "A lot of people who have not had that experience or that track — by the way, watch out, something's coming because none of us escape breakdowns or rebirths or the excruciation of what it takes to get to that. It's coming sometime at some time in some form."

"We got it out of the way, hopefully," Martin said, prompting Barrymore to reply, "We did!"

Well, sort of. "Oh, no I found another one at 40 which was interesting," Barrymore admitted a moment later, echoing previous comments she's made on her talk show about it being a difficult decade. "Yeah, I thought, 'Oh, 14, this is rock bottom.' Turns out I hit it at 40 as well."

Still, Barrymore managed to find the bright side. "We pull ourselves up, hopefully, and we find people that encourage us to tell the truth and to finally have the opposite of shame, which is what comes with any type of erratic behavior or society telling you 'that's not appropriate at this age' or 'what you're doing is out of control,'" she said. "That is shame. And when you live with shame, it is crippling."

Barrymore went on to note that she had "a lot of lightness in my experience in the institution," which she saw similarly echoed in the show. "I know that sounds wild, but it was encouragement to say your truths, to be brave, to find humor and heroism in your journey," she added. "And it's the best thing that ever happened to me, honestly."

She continued, "And I hold a lot of it sacrosanct, but it wasn't easy. It was hard as hell and I found that the tone that you brought to the show was true to a life experience when you gotta be broken and get fixed."

Martin agreed, adding, "And you've just got to hope that the people in charge are not Toni Collette as a villain, you know? You have to trust the people in charge!"

Barrymore detailed her experience staying at the Van Nuys Psychiatric hospital in a 2023 blog post, noting at the time that she "bonded with a lot of the kids" there "because like me, they did not know where to put their anger and they did not know how to live life anymore without the need to get high or self-destruct in some form and fashion."

She went on to describe the experience as both "revealing and healing" at the same exact time. "I lived a boundaryless life and job," Barrymore wrote. "And this place, as hellacious as it was, it was exactly what I needed from the too much excess my life had become on the outside."
