Reagan Foundation becomes the latest US institution drawn into Donald Trump's controversies

BILL BARROW and THALIA BEATY Sat, October 25, 2025 at 12:57 AM GMT+2 6 min read

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is drawing a volatile mix of blowback and praise for arguing that a Canadian government advertisement playing in U.S. markets misrepresented the 40th president's words to blast President Donald Trump's tariff policies.

It is not clear how the California-based Reagan Foundation decided to enter the fray over the ad, which was purchased by Ontario Premier Doug Ford and used portions of a 1987 Reagan speech on trade in which he questioned the wisdom of using tariffs as economic policy. But shortly after the foundation said on social media that the ad misused "selective audio" of the former president, Trump cited the foundation when, in his own social media critique, he threatened to stop all trade with America's northern neighbor and blasted the ad as unduly interfering in U.S. politics.

The foundation statement seemingly aligned Reagan, a free-trade acolyte, with Trump, a protectionist who has flouted decades of U.S. policy with high border taxes, including on goods from top U.S. trading partners. The foundation, which helps support the Reagan Presidential Library & Museum, also suggested it could take legal action against Ontario's provincial government, which sponsored the ad.

Reagan's speech is included in millions of administration records governed by the Presidential Record Act signed in 1981 by his predecessor, President Jimmy Carter. That law puts presidential remarks in the public domain, meaning no one must seek permission from presidential foundations or libraries to redistribute them.

Ford said Friday that the ad would be phased out so the U.S. and Canadian administrations can resume trade talks. He said the ad had achieved its goal but would continue to air during the first two games of the World Series.

'Easily intimidated by a call from the White House'

The backlash on social media was explosive, immediate and far from unanimous.

"Incredible cynicism and betrayal of Reagan by his own foundation," Paul Novosad, a Dartmouth College economist, wrote on X. Novosad said anyone who followed the foundation's advice to listen to Reagan's full remarks "would see he says exactly what the Ontario ad claims."

Jason Kenney, a former Canadian cabinet minister in a Conservative government, questioned the leadership of the Reagan Foundation on X. He said the entity had been "easily intimidated by a call from the White House, yet another sign of the hugely corrosive influence of Trump on the American conservative movement."

Trump supporters countered on social media with echoes of the president's assertions and accusations that Canada was meddling in U.S. politics.

Story Continues

Foundation staff did not respond to questions about how it has handled the matter. But one board member said in a brief interview that he knew nothing about the statement and had not been asked to participate in any deliberations ahead of its release.

"There may have been discussions about it, but I wasn't a part of any of them," Bradford Freeman, a private equity executive, told the AP.

White House press secretary Karolina Leavitt also did not immediately respond when asked via email whether the White House or anyone on the president's behalf asked the Reagan Foundation to intervene.

Several other board members also did not reply to AP inquiries.

An atypical role for a presidential foundation

At the least, the developments represent an unusually tense application of the foundation's typical mission, which is to buttress Reagan's legacy. The situation also highlights the foundation as the latest U.S. establishment institution to be drawn into the controversies of Trump's aggressive second administration.

Trump previously has elicited policy concessions from multiple U.S. universities, including elite public and private schools, after withholding or threatening to withhold federal funding. Presidents at Columbia University and the University of Virginia resigned as the Trump administration pressured their institutions.

Some U.S. corporations voluntarily rolled back diversity initiatives. More recently, high-profile firms including Amazon, Apple, Coinbase, Comcast, Google, Lockheed Martin and Meta Platforms have agreed to help finance the ballroom Trump plans for the White House after ordering the building's East Wing to be demolished. Many of those firms have regulatory business before Trump's administration.

On Truth Social, Trump called the Canadian ad "fake," despite the TV spot featuring clear audio excerpts from Reagan's April 25, 1987, radio address.

"CANADA CHEATED AND GOT CAUGHT!!! They fraudulently took a big buy ad saying that Ronald Reagan did not like Tariffs, when actually he LOVED TARIFFS FOR OUR COUNTRY, AND ITS NATIONAL SECURITY," he posted Friday.

Reagan used the radio address to explain why he was imposing targeted levies on some Japanese products as leverage in the countries' trade dispute over computer chips.

That gives Trump and his backers a hook to argue that Reagan might not oppose at least some of the current president's moves on trade. Yet Trump has imposed tariffs, often at unusually high rates, far more broadly than Reagan and other recent U.S. administrations. And even while explaining his Japan policy, Reagan spent much of the 1987 speech – less than 10 minutes long – emphasizing that he remained an opponent of tariffs, a characterization the Ontario ad appeared to accurately represent.

Reagan's speech affirmed his broad tariff opposition

"Throughout the world there's a growing realization that the way to prosperity for all nations is rejecting protectionist legislation and promoting fair and free competition," Reagan said.

He expounded:

"You see, at first, when someone says, 'Let's impose tariffs on foreign imports,' it looks like they're doing the patriotic thing by protecting American products and jobs. And sometimes for a short while it works -- but only for a short time.

"What eventually occurs is: First, homegrown industries start relying on government protection in the form of high tariffs. They stop competing and stop making the innovative management and technological changes they need to succeed in world markets. And then, while all this is going on, something even worse occurs. High tariffs inevitably lead to retaliation by foreign countries and the triggering of fierce trade wars. The result is more and more tariffs, higher and higher trade barriers, and less and less competition.

"So, soon, because of the prices made artificially high by tariffs that subsidize inefficiency and poor management, people stop buying. Then the worst happens: Markets shrink and collapse; businesses and industries shut down; and millions of people lose their jobs."

The Reagan foundation is a tax-exempt nonprofit that helps fund his library, which is part of the National Archives and Records Administration. As part of its tax-exempt status, the foundation is prohibited from endorsing political candidates and, generally, must be nonpartisan in its activities.

Drew Barrymore is reflecting on how her two-year stay at a rehabilitation facility as a young teen changed her life.

During Friday's episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the Emmy winner sat down with Mae Martin, who uses they/them pronouns, to discuss their recently released Netflix series, Wayward. The thriller — which stars Alyvia Alyn Lind, Sidney Topliffe, and Toni Collette — follows two friends who attend an academy for trouble teens and is loosely inspired by Martin's real-life friend Nicole, who was "sent to one of these troubled teen institutes" for two years.

"I also was someone who got taken away and put in a place for two years," Barrymore said. To which Martin responded, "I did not know that. I mean, I know that you were a wayward teen — as was I, and I was in rehab and stuff — but I didn't know that you were at one of those places."

Yvonne Hemsey/Getty

Drew Barrymore in 1982

In a 2015 interview with The Guardian, Barrymore revealed that she underwent an 18-month stint at a rehabilitation facility for drug and alcohol addiction at age 13. She told the outlet that her younger self "really was alone" at the time "and it felt… terrible. It was a really rebellious time. I would run off. I was very, very angry."

While speaking with Martin, Barrymore explained that she knew that they had a real understanding of what it was like to reside in one such facility. "I didn't know that about you, but watching the show there was way too much accuracy," she said. "It was too real for me in that element where I knew there was no way you weren't telling an authentic perspective."

Martin confirmed that they were 16 when they entered their respective facility. "And I don't know about you," they said, "but now, as an adult, I feel so protective of young people and having had that experience of being pathologized at a very young age for things that are just kind of… yeah, I think that all went into it."

Turning to the audience, Martin quickly clarified that Wayward itself is not a heavy watch despite its serious subject matter.

"No it's not!" Barrymore agreed. "A lot of people who have not had that experience or that track — by the way, watch out, something's coming because none of us escape breakdowns or rebirths or the excruciation of what it takes to get to that. It's coming sometime at some time in some form."

"We got it out of the way, hopefully," Martin said, prompting Barrymore to reply, "We did!"

Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our EW Dispatch newsletter.

Well, sort of. "Oh, no I found another one at 40 which was interesting," Barrymore admitted a moment later, echoing previous comments she's made on her talk show about it being a difficult decade. "Yeah, I thought, 'Oh, 14, this is rock bottom.' Turns out I hit it at 40 as well."

Still, Barrymore managed to find the bright side. "We pull ourselves up, hopefully, and we find people that encourage us to tell the truth and to finally have the opposite of shame, which is what comes with any type of erratic behavior or society telling you 'that's not appropriate at this age' or 'what you're doing is out of control,'" she said. "That is shame. And when you live with shame, it is crippling."

The Drew Barrymore Show/YouTube

Drew Barrymore with Mae Martin on 'The Drew Barrymore Show'

Barrymore went on to note that she had "a lot of lightness in my experience in the institution," which she saw similarly echoed in the show. "I know that sounds wild, but it was encouragement to say your truths, to be brave, to find humor and heroism in your journey," she added. "And it's the best thing that ever happened to me, honestly."

She continued, "And I hold a lot of it sacrosanct, but it wasn't easy. It was hard as hell and I found that the tone that you brought to the show was true to a life experience when you gotta be broken and get fixed."

Martin agreed, adding, "And you've just got to hope that the people in charge are not Toni Collette as a villain, you know? You have to trust the people in charge!"

Barrymore detailed her experience staying at the Van Nuys Psychiatric hospital in a 2023 blog post, noting at the time that she "bonded with a lot of the kids" there "because like me, they did not know where to put their anger and they did not know how to live life anymore without the need to get high or self-destruct in some form and fashion."

She went on to describe the experience as both "revealing and healing" at the same exact time. "I lived a boundaryless life and job," Barrymore wrote. "And this place, as hellacious as it was, it was exactly what I needed from the too much excess my life had become on the outside."

The Drew Barrymore Show airs weekdays on CBS.

Priceless jewels vanished from the Louvre in one of the most daring heists of the century — but don't look at Matt Bomer.

The Fellow Travelers star, who played con artist and thief Neal Caffrey on all six seasons of USA's White Collar, distanced himself from the scene of the crime in a cheeky social media post on Thursday.

"I would like to state for the record that I had nothing to do with the Louvre," Bomer wrote on Threads alongside a winking emoji and a photo of himself in Paris.

Bomer also shared the post on Instagram, where several of his White Collar castmates questioned his alibi.

Tim DeKay, who portrayed FBI Special Agent Peter Burke on the show, commented, "Yeah, we'll see about that, Caffrey…"

Meanwhile, Tiffani Thiessen, who played Burke's wife Elizabeth on the series, wrote, "But are we to really believe that friend?"

And Ross McCall, who played rival thief Matthew Keller, suggested that he was involved in the heist, not Bomer. "But I might…" he wrote on Instagram. He also shared a similar message in response to Bomer's original Threads post: "Maybe I did…"

David Giesbrecht/USA Network/NBCU Photo Bank/NBCUniversal/Getty

Matt Bomer and Tim DeKay on 'White Collar'

McCall actually was in Paris around the time of the incident, as he shared an Instagram post last week with numerous photos of the city. "She never disappoints," the actor said of France's capital in his caption.

On Sunday, burglars allegedly broke into the Louvre Museum, smashing windows and display cases to snag eight bejeweled objects including a diadem worn by Empress Eugénie (the wife of Napoleon III) as well as necklaces made with royal emeralds and royal sapphires. The entire operation, which involved an electric ladder and a scooter getaway, took no more than seven minutes.

In June 2024, White Collar creator Jeff Eastin confirmed that a revival of the series was in the works with Bomer, DeKay, and Thiessen all reprising their original roles. Eastin revealed that the show will be titled White Collar Renaissance in September 2024. The creator's most recent update came in February, when he announced that Netflix, Peacock, and Prime Video are all in the running to acquire the revival.

The original White Collar saw Caffrey collaborate with Burke and the FBI in exchange for his freedom — often while working an angle of his own. The show ran for 81 episodes across six seasons from 2009 to 2014.

'Survivor' alum Parvati Shallow shades host Jeff Probst after remark: 'Get a new move'

-

 • 'Survivor' alum Parvati Shallow shades host Jeff Probst after remark: 'Get a new move'

Anthony Robledo, USA TODAY October 25, 2025 at 12:33 AM

0

"Survivor" royalty Parvati Shallow is rolling her eyes after a fellow contestant denied her status as a two-time winner of the reality TV competition series.

On an Oct. 22 episode of "Survivor" host Jeff Probst's official "On Fire" podcast, Season 31 winner Jeremy Collins commented on Shallow's victory on international spin-off series "Australian Survivor" by calling her a 1.5 winner.

Shallow, who won Season 16 of the U.S. franchise in 2008 and nearly won Season 20 in 2010, recently came out on top in the latest "Australian Survivor" season titled "Australia vs the World." Many fans have welcomed her to the two-time winners club, joining the likes of Tony Vlachos and Sandra Diaz-Twine, while others have discredited her triumph.

Collins' controversial comment came after Probst asked him whether Shannon Fairweather, a player on the current Season 49, is similar to legendary player Shallow.

Collins called the comparison extreme and seemingly complimented Shallow, adding, "Parv is Parv. She won once; she almost won a second time. Let's not do too much." Probst then asked him whether he considers Shallow a two-time winner.

"So listen, I don't think so," Collins replied. "In my 'Survivor' world, I say she has one and a half wins. It's a good win. 'Australian Survivor' is a good win, but it's not the same as 'Survivor' U.S., it's not the same."

An unamused Shallow addressed the remarks in the comment section of an Instagram post sharing the clip, writing: "A couple of straight men trying to discredit a woman . . . get a new move boys."

"Somebody call @gayleking," she added, calling on "CBS Mornings" co-anchor Gayle King for backup after the broadcast journalist previously criticized Probst earlier this year for not asking Shallow to join the milestone 50th Season.

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives of Shallow, Probst and CBS for comment.

Probst has repeatedly clarified that no contestants who played in 2020's Season 40, including both Shallow and Collins, were asked to return for the all-stars season, set to air early next year.

Fellow contestant Kelly Wentworth, who made her "Survivor" debut in 2014's Season 29 alongside Collins, also rushed to Shallow's defense.

"Eyes are all the way in the back of my head," Wentworth commented.

"Survivor" fans are split on whether Shallow is a two-time winner.

Critics argue that her success on "Australian Survivor" is minimized by the fact that the physical and social game took place over just 16 days instead of the standard 26 days the U.S. franchise uses or the 39 days it previously used.

Supporters argue that the fast-paced nature of the shortened game made it more competitive, as well as the fact that Shallow competed against some of the most skilled players across various international franchises, including two from the U.S.

Regardless of the discourse, many consider Shallow one of the best players of the reality competition series, where castaways live on an island, compete in daunting physical challenges, form alliances and vote each other out.

She has played the U.S. franchise a total of four times. She placed 6th in Season 13, won Season 16, was a runner-up in Season 20 and 16th in Season 40.

 • "Halo" team talks new "Combat Evolved" remake, crossing over to PS5, and addressing 25 years of player feedback (exclusive)

This year's Halo World Championship broadcast came with some big news: as the gaming franchise approaches its 25th anniversary, Halo is evolving.

The studio officially confirmed the impending arrival of Halo: Campaign Evolved, an Unreal Engine 5-powered remake of 2001's Halo: Combat Evolved, the game that kicked off the entire series. And continuing efforts to bring more Halo content to other platforms, the new title will be available on PlayStation 5 in 2026 alongside Xbox consoles, PC, and Steam.

"They can play with their friends across platform," Brian Jarrard, Halo Studios community director, confirms.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly conducted ahead of Friday's reveal, Jarrard and Damon Conn, executive producer of Halo: Campaign Evolved, call this "a rally point for the future of the franchise."

As Conn lists off, "We've had a chance to retouch animations for the gameplay; we've rebuilt the environments; we have three new missions, so there's new lore and story to be told with this version; we have more skulls and collectibles than ever before; and it's a chance to go back to it. We can reignite the spark and bring [in] new players."

Jarrard affirms Campaign Evolved as a true remake and not a remaster, saying, "There's really not a single piece of this entire game that hasn't been touched in some way or another. It's more than just a graphics glow-up, if you will. It's been very important for the team not only to stay true to the spirit of the original, but also to think about things that would be appealing to a new generation of fans. What does it mean to release a first-person shooter in today's day and age?"

Painted by Lead Concept artist at Halo Studios, Jamie Ro

The original Halo: Combat Evolved plopped players in the 26th century on the distant planet Reach when the collective of alien races known as the Covenant waged a religious war against humanity, defended by their augmented supersoldiers called Spartans. The game introduced Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, who would become the franchise's most recognizable character.

In terms of the three new missions, Conn says they will involve never-before-told stories of Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson, a senior non-commissioned officer and highly trained Marine on the human side of the Covenant war. However, the team isn't ready to disclose much about that material at this stage.

Halo has already found success in crossing platforms...at least on the TV side. After Paramount+ canceled its live-action series adaptation, starring Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, the show found new life and new viewership when the existing episodes debuted on Netflix. "Not surprising, honestly," Jarrard comments. "It was just another way for a new audience to get introduced to the essence of Halo" — which is also the mission of Campaign Evolved.

2026 will mark the 25th anniversary of Halo, which means, as both Jarrard and Conn acknowledge, Halo Studios now has 25 years of feedback from players about what they want and don't want from their gaming experiences. "We now have the hindsight to look back," Jarrard mentions. "What if we could react to some of this feedback?"

Halo Studios

'Halo: Campaign Evolved'

They point to some specific examples, chief among them being split screen. "There's been a lot of vocal feedback around split screen," Jarrard admits. "Halo was kind of born from that, and the franchise strayed away from that. Very excited to bring that back. From the very beginning, that was a non-negotiable. Our fans repeatedly told us. We have learned that lesson."

The new elements of the remake speak to the player experience from that 2001 game in a similar way. Another example: Gamers will now have access to nine weapons from across the franchise in Campaign Evolved that weren't available in Combat Evolved. "One funny bit that you couldn't do in the original game was pick up the energy sword. We're gonna make that thing usable in this game," Conn says.

Jarrard also mentions the Flood, a parasitic alien species introduced in Combat Evolved that have become recurring antagonists of the franchise. "They were pretty cool and rudimentary when they first debuted, but by the time they got the way through Halo 3 [2007], they became a lot more formidable, a lot smarter, a lot more fun to fight," he says. "So that's a prime example of being able to now pluck the best of what the Flood became and injecting that back into what the Flood weren't quite capable of when they first debuted in 2001."

More generally, Jarrard points to how the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) presentation has improved greatly in games in the years since that 2001 entry. He remembers his own experience on Combat Evolved, getting lost in the library near the late stages of the game.

"You're kind of wandering around through repeating corridors and it looks the same," Jarrard describes. "We know that fans have regularly lamented that. It's become a love-hate thing with Halo fans. The team can easily go in there and make adjustments to level, layout, and flow, but also present [information] back to players with wayfinding."

Now...let's talk about sprinting. Jarrard and Conn know full well that this is a hot-button topic among the Halo fanbase — pro- versus anti-sprinting.

Halo Studios

Pelican Beach in 'Halo: Campaign Evolved'

Conn worked on the movement mechanics for 2021's Halo: Infinite, the most recent Halo release, which included sprinting as a normal function. "In this game," he says of Campaign Evolved, "it's a player choice. We're working on making sure that every person that plays Halo can play the way that they want in that regard."

Jarrard chimes in. "This will probably get me flamed, but sprint has been introduced in the franchise since 2010. So there's been more Halo with sprint than without," he says. "But when you have almost 25 years of a franchise spanning seven mainline titles, they've each evolved in different ways as they've gone. Each one has created its own pocket of, 'That's the only one I like.'"

Reiterating the idea of player choice (to sprint or not to sprint), he adds, "What made the combat fun, what makes Halo feel like Halo, we don't wanna mess with that. What Halo really is and what's most important to me, you ask 100 fans, you'll probably get a little bit different answer from everyone."
