The internet started side-eyeing the exact timeline of their relationship, with some even accusing them of cheating on their spouses—and Sophia is finally setting the record straight on the latest episode of Call Her Daddy.
As host Alex Cooper asked the actor to clarify when she and Ashlyn actually “stepped out as a couple,” Sophia responded, “Well, no, we didn’t. I’m gonna be really clear.”
“You know, outing Brooke Davis felt really fun for the tabloids. And the only way to stop the monstrosity of it was to say, like, ‘I can show you this isn’t true,’” she continued, explaining how her camp addressed the rumors at the time.
“My team was like, ‘Yeah, see, ridiculous. They’re friends.’ And I went, ‘I took her to dinner last week.’ And then they said, ‘Are you going to take her to dinner again?’ And I said, ‘Well, considering I feel like I got oxygen for the first time in my life…yeah,’” Sophia shared, adding that “it was off to the races” once her team told outlets that she and Ashlyn did, in fact, go on a date.
“Two people who had filed for divorce and lived in separate residences from their exes went to dinner,” she said of the timeline, confirming there was “no overlap” with their past marriages.
“Everybody wishes they could have done a million things differently at the time,” she said, explaining that she “wished” she had “taken her on a date six weeks later.”
“I can’t change my reality for anyone else,” she shared. “I’m never going to change anybody’s mind who made it up.”
She also addressed rumors that Ashlyn had cheated on her then-wife, Ali, when they met.
“There’s also a part of me that goes, ‘I’ve done too much work on myself to hurt someone when I’ve been hurt.’ Especially when there’s children involved,” Sophia said, referring to her stepchildren, Sloane and Ocean.
“I don’t think I would have made it through that had I not known her for so long and had I not seen the work and the sadness and the heartbreak and the absolute crushing experience [going through a divorce],” she added. “When [online narratives] affect people’s jobs, when they destroy someone’s ability to provide for their family, when they destroy someone’s credibility unfairly… I don’t want to be party to that. And that’s a really hard practice ‘cause all I want to do is be like, ‘Here’s all the information. And if you had the information, the vibes would be different.’”
