Spencer Grammer shared that she lost feeling in her right hand after being stabbed in 2020.
The Greek alum shared that she has “never gotten the full feeling back.”
She began playing the guitar as a way to improve mobility, which led her to starting the musical duo Belle and Chain.
Spencer Grammer, the eldest daughter of Kelsey Grammer, is recounting the moment she was stabbed in New York City.
The Greek alum, 42, was stabbed through the hand while trying to break up a fight between her friend and a drunk man with a knife. The incident caused her to lose feeling in her right hand and the effects have lingered to this day.
“I really have never gotten full feeling back,” Spencer told PEOPLE in an interview published on Tuesday. “It’s about a 20% chance that you will when you have a severe nerve injury.”
As part of her recovery, her doctor encouraged her to pick up an instrument in order to improve her mobility. She chose the guitar and is now pursuing a new career in music with her new country duo Belle and Chain. Although she’s been an actress for years, beginning with her first appearance on Cheers as a child in 1992, she’s excited to pursue a different creative outlet.
“More doors have opened for me playing music than it has been for acting for a while. I don’t know if that’s just because I started to change over time,” she said. “I think when you suffer a pretty traumatic event ... it definitely changed me as a person and music became more aligned with my soul, in a way.”

The stabbing occurred while Grammer and her friend were outside of a restaurant in the East Village. The Rick and Morty actress later said she should not have gotten involved, but she wanted to help “alleviate” the situation.
“I honestly shouldn’t have tried to help,” she told PEOPLE in 2022. “But there wasn’t a knife involved to begin with. It was like any normal fight, basically.”
Grammer didn’t realize that the man had a knife and had shared that the assailant was never found. The experience illuminated how quickly an altercation can escalate and become a life-changing event. For the first six months after the incident, she said her son Emmett, 14, had to help her tie her shoes because her injury prevented her from doing so.
“I know that within five minutes your whole life can change, so it’s better to be safe than sorry,” she said.
